The Annoying Conclusion

By blog on Jul. 3, 2009.

When I heard that Crackdown 2 was coming out, it reminded me all over just how annoying the closing sequence was for Crackdown. In case you didn’t play the game, it was kind of a bizzaro version of Grand Theft Auto. Crackdown was a sandbox, open city, game, where you were a sort of super hero agent who fought crime. It was fun, especially if you got your jump skill really high, because you could jump from skyscraper rooftop to skyscraper rooftop.

So you run around, taking on different enemy groups which were split into three different crews, Los Muertos, Volk, and the Shai-Gen Corporation. In the end you had to annihilate each of them. Okay sounds fair enough, I’m down with that. I played right through the game, which really wasn’t that long, and got to the final sequence. There I was, standing on top of the Agent Hub, right in the centre of the three little islands that make up the city. The voice over, the voice of the Director, tells you that the Agency was behind all three of the gangs. That they had set them up as powers in the city, so that the Agency could sweep in and save the day, and because of all the fear the poor citizens of the city had experienced at the hands of the nasty gangs, they wouldn’t care what the Agency did, what liberties they took, because the ‘threat’ would be gone. The Director even suggested that the plan would be implemented in other cities.

How do you take the wind out of the sails of victory? By making your hero feel like a villain, and a stupid one at that… a chump. I was so irritated when I listened to that obnoxious voice over in the ending. I mean seriously? That is what we are dealing with? Who thought that was cool? I bet they were very immature! :) So when I heard there was going to be a second game, I wasn’t very excited. But I have to say, looking at the plot, it could be better than the last one… Could be, but I think I will wait for a good plot description of the game once it is released before I get it.
